Definition:  A kind of written art that uses language to express more than the literal meanings of the words. Poetry can by rhythmic, often rhymes, and uses figures of speech and imagery to appeal to a reader’s senses and imagination.

Example: 

Roses are red.

Violets are blue.

I'm in love with poetry,

Why aren't you!

Significance:  Poetry is another type of literature that should be read, analyzed, and appreciated for the message conveyed.
